Pushing man

Pushing man — Granada, Spain (2016)

My wife and I went out for an early morning walk in Granada. We were staying in the picturesque Gypsy quarter of the city. On our walk, we came across the beautiful uphill street. I noticed the pedestrian sign and thought, wouldn’t be cool if someone walked by right in front of the sign.

So we waited and waited. No one came since it was really early in the morning. My wife got tired of waiting for me so she walked back to the hotel. I waited for probably an hour but probably more. I took a few pictures of people coming down the hill, but this one was perfect. The man’s legs and arm are in the exact position of what’s on the sign.

Some people have told me I should have included the full pedestrian sign in my picture. But I intentionally cut it off. For me, my eyes go to the silhouette of the pushing man first, then I notice the sign. If the full sign was included, my eyes would instantly go to the sign, then notice man as a secondary element. Maybe that’s not a big issue for most, but in my composition, I wanted the man as the primary element and the sign as a secondary element.
